Murray State Beats Duke to Secure First-Ever College World Series Berth
In a historic upset at the Durham Super Regional, Murray State Baseball defeated Duke 5-4 on Monday night, clinching their first-ever trip to the Men’s College World Series 2025. Luke Mistone’s clutch home run in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie, while Graham Kelham delivered another dominant long relief outing to seal the win.
With this victory, Murray State (44-15) becomes just the fourth No. 4 seed in NCAA history to advance to Omaha. Head coach Dan Skirka praised his team’s unity and grit: “These guys play the game right. They play the game together, and I couldn’t be more proud. Now they get to go do it in Omaha.”
Jonathan Hogart powered the Racers with two homers, including a game-tying blast in the seventh — his 21st of the season. Mistone followed with a solo shot to take the lead, and Dan Tauken’s RBI triple extended the advantage to 5-3. Despite a late threat from Duke, Kelham shut the door, earning his fourth win of the season with 2⅔ innings of high-pressure relief.
Duke (40-20), seeking its first MCWS appearance since 1961, was denied after a dramatic finish that included a reversed interference call. But Kelham kept his composure to close it out. “He’s a dog — the definition of it right there,” said Skirka.
This unforgettable win cements Murray State’s place in College World Series history and sets the stage for an exciting run in Omaha.
