OMAHA, Neb. — Arkansas Razorbacks pitcher Gage Wood delivered a legendary performance in the 2025 Men’s College World Series (MCWS), throwing the third no-hitter in MCWS history and the first since 1960. With a record-setting 19 strikeouts, Wood led Arkansas to a 3-0 victory over Murray State, keeping the Razorbacks’ College World Series championship hopes alive.
Historic Night for Gage Wood in Omaha
The right-handed junior from Batesville, Arkansas was electric from the start, using his high-powered fastball and wicked curve to dominate hitters. Between the third and fifth innings, Wood struck out seven consecutive batters, becoming the sixth pitcher since 1999 to accomplish that feat in the MCWS.
By the end of the fifth inning, he had racked up 11 strikeouts — the most ever by an Arkansas pitcher in the MCWS. Wood also became only the second pitcher in MCWS history to carry a perfect game into the sixth inning.
Perfect Game Bid Broken, But No-Hitter Remains
In the seventh, Wood reached a career-high 14 strikeouts. His run at perfection ended in the eighth after hitting Dom Decker on a 2-2 count, but he didn’t lose focus. Instead, he responded with back-to-back strikeouts, including a vicious curveball that froze Dan Tauken, sending Wood bouncing off the mound in celebration.
He hit another batter in the ninth, but the play was overturned after it was ruled that Nico Bermeo leaned into the pitch. That marked Wood’s 17th strikeout.
Record-Breaking Finish Secures Razorbacks’ Win
Gage Wood closed out the game in style: a five-pitch strikeout of Conner Cunningham and a four-pitch strikeout of Jonathan Hogart — capped by a blazing 97-mph fastball. His 19 strikeouts set a new MCWS record for a nine-inning game and marked the 11th no-hitter in Division I baseball this season.
As the final pitch landed, Wood erupted in celebration, showing off the red “Arkansas” across his chest before being mobbed by teammates. His parents and Razorbacks fans erupted in the stands, cheering one of the most dominant performances in College World Series history.
What’s Next for Arkansas?
With the win, Arkansas advances to face the winner of the UCLA vs. LSU matchup on Tuesday for a chance to reach the MCWS semifinals. Gage Wood’s legendary no-hitter will go down not only as a key moment in this tournament — but also as one of the greatest pitching performances in NCAA baseball history.
